Lone Star Classic Goal Ball Tournament

460 320x240 2011 03 04 goalball 043 Lone Star Classic Goal Ball Tournament LEOs volunteered at the Goal Ball tournament on Friday March 4th.

Ten LEOs met at the Colleyville Community Center at 4:15pm to caravan to the tournament. After sitting in some traffic they arrived and registered to be volunteer line judges for the Lone Star Classic Goalball Tournament
at Irving High School.

The tournament was amazing as teams of three blind or visually impaired students competed against each other. They hurl a large blue, bell filled ball down the court where the other teams tries to defend their goal line and block the ball from crossing. It is fast paced requires an immense amount of concentration and quick reflexes. All players wear blacked out goggles so everyone is completely in the dark.

Our LEOs did a great job assisting the officials and after the tournament they were allowed to gear up, get blindfolded, and take their turn on the court. If you were not there ask a LEO who was. Every LEO should take advantage of this opportunity to serve and share in the fun.

It was no longer economically efficient to keep the warehouse when it was only being used about twice a month. Lions clubs in our area are working on an alternative solution. The club will be informed as more information becomes available.

Colleyville Middle School Lego League performs for the LEOs

FIRST LEGO League Skit

The Colleyville Middle School Lego League visited the LEOs and performed a skit that helped inform members about deteriorating peripheral vision and a way to help combat it. LEO Jacob Hethcock is also a member of the CMS FLL Team. Jacob was involved in getting some of his teammates to help with the LEOs Eyeglass Recycling efforts where they learned how to use a lensometer to measure the prescription strength of used eyeglasses being prepared for use by mission groups around the world.

The FIRST LEGO League (also known by the acronym FLL) is an international competition for elementary and middle school students (ages 9–14 in the USA and Canada, 9-16 and Australia). It is arranged by the FIRST organization.

Each year the contest focuses on a different real-world topic related to the sciences. Each challenge within the competition then revolves around that theme. The robotics part of the competition revolves around designing and programming LEGO Robots to complete tasks. The students work out solutions to the various problems they are given and then meet for regional tournaments to share their knowledge, compare ideas, and display their robots.
